Lanberg is introducing a construction upgrade that enhances the durability and reliability of our rack cabinets. From now on, new free-standing rack cabinets are equipped with galvanized (zinc-coated) mounting rails, replacing the previously painted versions.
Why switch to galvanized rails?
Steel components can be protected against corrosion in several ways. Painted rails rely on a barrier coating: once the paint layer is chipped or scratched, the exposed steel is directly in contact with air and moisture, and corrosion can start locally.
Galvanized rails are coated with a layer of zinc that works both as a barrier and as sacrificial (cathodic) protection. The zinc corrodes first and continues to protect the underlying steel even if the surface is damaged, which significantly extends the effective service life of the component compared to typical paint systems.
Independent industry data shows that properly specified zinc coatings can protect steel for many decades, whereas paint systems usually require periodic refurbishment to maintain comparable performance.
Benefits for IT and telecom installations
For indoor applications such as IT and telecom racks, this upgrade brings:
- Higher long-term corrosion resistance, including in rooms with fluctuating humidity and temperature
- Better resistance to mechanical wear and scratches around mounting holes and rail edges, where devices are frequently installed, repositioned or removed,
- More predictable, low-maintenance performance over the full service life of the cabinet, which supports long-term planning of infrastructure upgrades and service windows.
All critical dimensions and mounting patterns remain unchanged, so 19" equipment and accessories stay fully compatible with the upgraded cabinets.
Roll-out and availability
The upgrade is being introduced gradually across the Lanberg free-standing rack portfolio. However, customers placing orders for new standing rack cabinets now will already receive units with galvanized mounting rails.
