The previous two articles in this series built the context: what a PoE switch is, why it simplifies installations, and what to look for when choosing one. Now it is time for specifics. The Lanberg ILGE-8P-2S-120 is the answer to the needs we have already discussed: installations requiring high PoE power, resistance to harsh conditions, and reliability you can count on regardless of the circumstances.

Who is the ILGE-8P-2S-120 for?

Compact PoE light industrial switch

Let us start there, because it matters. This switch is not intended for a server rack in an air-conditioned data center or for an office network with a few VoIP phones. It was designed for installers and integrators building networks where conditions are tough, hardware requirements are high, and downtime has real consequences.

The typical user is a company installing surveillance systems in industrial facilities, an integrator building network infrastructure in outdoor environments, an installer deploying Wi-Fi networks in warehouses and production halls, or a specialist in security systems for public facilities. Wherever a switch has to operate in an outdoor cabinet, a roadside enclosure, or an industrial control cabinet, the ILGE-8P-2S-120 is exactly where it belongs.

120W per port means the end of power compromises

As we mentioned earlier, the power budget is the parameter that most often causes problems in practice. The ILGE-8P-2S-120 solves this problem decisively.

The switch supports the PoE bt standard, also known as PoE++, and delivers up to 90W of power per individual port. This is a level that practically eliminates the question of whether the switch can handle the power requirements in almost any typical installation scenario.

What does that mean in practice? An advanced PTZ camera with a heated housing drawing 60–80W? No problem. A latest-generation Wi-Fi 6E access point with multiple antennas and active cooling? No issue. An industrial device that draws significantly more power at startup than during normal operation? For this switch, that is not a challenge.

Importantly, high power per port directly translates into a simpler cabinet layout. There is no need to install separate external power supplies for demanding devices. One switch replaces a switch plus several power supplies, which means less cabling, fewer potential points of failure, and a much cleaner installation overall.

An 8x PoE and 2x SFP layout means a well-thought-out port architecture

The port configuration of the ILGE-8P-2S-120 is not accidental. Four Gigabit PoE bt ports support end devices such as cameras, access points, readers, and phones. Two independent SFP uplink ports handle the connection to the rest of the network.

This division is highly practical. In a distributed installation where the switch is located hundreds of meters or even several kilometers away from the main network node, the SFP ports make it possible to use fiber modules and run transmission over virtually any distance without compromising quality. High-resolution video from eight cameras can travel over fiber without buffering, delays, or packet loss that may appear in saturated copper-based installations.

Two independent SFP ports also provide flexibility in network topology. They make it possible to run links in two different directions, create a redundant connection, or simply keep one port in reserve for future expansion.

Full flexibility in the choice of SFP modules means the installer decides whether a given location needs a single-mode connection over several kilometers, a multimode connection over a shorter distance, or even a copper module for a nearby cabinet. The switch does not force a single solution.

Redundant power input means uninterrupted operation in all conditions

In critical installations such as surveillance in a protected facility, an airport security system, or an industrial network in a manufacturing plant, network downtime is not an option. The ILGE-8P-2S-120 supports dual power input with automatic failover.

The principle is simple and effective. Two independent power sources are connected to the switch, for example the main power supply from the grid and a backup supply from a battery system or UPS. During normal operation, the switch uses the primary source. If that source fails, the secondary source immediately takes over the load without interrupting the operation of connected devices. Cameras keep recording, access points stay online, and sensors continue reporting.

This is a solution that has been standard in the enterprise segment for years, yet in a compact light industrial switch it still stands out. For an installer, it is an argument that helps justify the choice of proper-grade equipment. For the end customer, it is a guarantee that the investment in a security system will not become useless at the first power failure.

Operation from -25°C to 65°C and DIN rail mounting

An industrial switch has to work where ordinary office equipment fails. The ILGE-8P-2S-120 ensures stable operation in a temperature range from -25°C to 65°C, covering virtually every outdoor installation scenario in European conditions, as well as hot production halls where summer temperatures combined with heat emitted by machines can turn a cabinet into a small furnace.

The integrated DIN rail mount is another feature whose value becomes obvious during the first installation in an automation cabinet. There is no drilling, no screwing on adapters, and no searching for space for a device that does not fit standard infrastructure. You slide the switch onto the DIN rail, the latch clicks, and it is done. In traditional rack cabinets, optional mounting brackets help just as much, giving full freedom to adapt the device to the rest of the infrastructure. Fast, secure, and fully aligned with the standards used across the industrial world.

This combination of a wide operating temperature range, DIN rail mounting, redundant power input, and a solid metal housing makes the ILGE-8P-2S-120 equipment you can confidently install in outdoor telecom cabinets, cabinets mounted near urban surveillance poles, industrial distribution boards, and any other location where conditions are nothing like an office server room.

Deployment scenarios where the ILGE-8P-2S-120 performs best

Industrial and outdoor surveillance. Factories, logistics warehouses, multi-storey car parks, shipyards, or mines. In all of these environments, cameras are spread across large areas, often in hard-to-reach locations, while image quality requirements continue to increase year after year. Four high-power PoE bt ports can support even the most demanding PTZ cameras, while the SFP ports enable signal transmission to the central management system regardless of distance.

Urban surveillance and Smart City infrastructure. Camera poles at intersections, monitoring systems in parks and railway stations, intelligent transport nodes. This is an environment where a switch must operate for months without maintenance, survive freezing winters and hot summers, and where failure means a gap in the public safety system. In this context, redundant power and a wide operating temperature range are not optional extras, but requirements.

Wi-Fi networks in warehouses and production halls. High-bay warehouses, manufacturing halls, logistics centers. Wi-Fi 6 access points mounted under high ceilings, powered by PoE, supporting barcode scanners, mobile terminals, and IoT devices. High per-port power and stable performance in demanding temperatures are essential here.

Small network nodes in distributed installations. Petrol stations, banks with branch locations, retail chains, or border crossing infrastructure. Anywhere several cameras, an access point, and a card reader need to be supported in one place, while the switch sits in a small non-air-conditioned cabinet, the ILGE-8P-2S-120 solves the problem with a single device.

Access control and security systems. Entrance gates, mantraps in protected facilities, biometric systems, and thermal cameras at entry points. Devices that require high PoE power, operate 24/7, and are deployed in places where power reliability is essential.

PoE light industrial switch

One switch, a complete solution

The ILGE-8P-2S-120 combines functions that would normally require several separate devices or solutions. High PoE power on every port eliminates the need for external power supplies. Redundant power input reduces the need for an external UPS dedicated to the switch itself. SFP ports eliminate the need for media converters on long cable runs. DIN mounting and temperature resistance remove the need to build dedicated climate-controlled enclosures for network equipment.

For the installer, this translates into specific benefits: less equipment in the cabinet, faster installation, lower material costs, and fewer points where something can go wrong. For the end customer, it means a network that operates without interruption, regardless of the season or environmental conditions.

For years, the light industrial segment was associated with expensive equipment available only to large integrators. The Lanberg ILGE-8P-2S-120 changes that image. It is industrial-class equipment in a compact, practical form, designed for the real challenges of modern network installations.
